"Variety by the water"
Speaker: Udo Schwarzer (P)
Udo Schwarzer works as a biologist for over 20 years in Portugal, where he and his wife, Claudia, run the swimming pond planning company Bio Piscinas, Lda. Over the years, some 200 swimming ponds of their own brand Piscinas biológicas® have been built in Portugal.Udo Schwarzer is President of the International organization for natural bathing waters (IOB), the federation of swimming pond associations.
Worldwide trends in the construction of natural swimming pools There has been natural swimming pond construction in central Europe for a good 25 years now. For a long time it was regarded as part of the garden and landscaping sector, but for some years now there have also been highly specialised companies, both in the field of the planning of large public natural pools and in the design and construction of highly complex private pools.
Udo Schwarzer looks back a little, then he travels around the world, for this sector is now also active in countries far beyond the equator, and above all is very forward-looking. What should the points of reference be for this sector?

LANDSCAPE AESTHETICS – EFFECTS OF WATER IN THE LANDSCAPE AND GARDEN
Along with the scientific observation of the water, its mental and aesthetic effect on people cannot be rated highly enough. All areas of life that have to do with water always have by default an aesthetic component that shapes the values of young people, their behavior and their value scales. This aesthetic side must be brought to the forefront of general consciousness. Therefore, this presentation will discuss three areas that deal with the aesthetic components of water. These are the scientific, intellectual history and cultural aspects.
Speaker: Prof. Hans-Hermann Wöbse (D)
After training as a gardener, Hans Hermann Wöbse enrolled at the University of Hannover to study landscape maintenance, received his PhD in 1970, six years later her received his post-doctoral lecturing qualification. Since 1980, he has been a professor for landscape planning at the institute for landscape management and nature conservation at the University of Hannover. At the same time, teaching assignments at the TU Graz and the University of Jena.
Emphasis on research and teaching: Landscape aesthetics, protection, maintenance and development of historical cultural landscape. Active in numerous associations.

MAINTENANCE AND CARE INSTRUCTIONS, POND MAINTENENCE – THE UNDERESTIMATED TOPIC
Speaker: Benedikt Kauertz (D)
Customer satisfaction stands or falls with the maintenance. How does one care for a swimming pond or natural pool? What amount of time is required for this? These are the most common questions that arise during customer meetings. Maintenance has to be considered during the planning phase. Factors such as construction shape, materials, filling water, location etc. are decisive for the type and dimensions of maintenance. This applies not only to private swimming ponds, but also to public natural pools. The presentation provides a clear and practical view of which criteria must be considered for the maintenance of the swimming pond and natural pools and what the consequences of incorrect maintenance application can be.
Benedikt Kauertz studied spatial and environmental planning from 2000 to 2006 at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern (degree Dipl.-Ing.). The focus of his studies was spatially related environmental assessment. Since 2006, he has been working at the IFEU institute for energy and environmental research in Heidelberg. His work focus has been in the areas of environmental assessment of projects, technologies and products. Benedikt Kauertz is a specialist as well as a project manager for diverse ecological balances (LCA), environmental compatibility examinations (UVU) and strategic environmental examinations (SUP).

Surface treatment and construction materials
Speakers: Tino Bräuchle (D), Thorsten Schwuchow (D)
considered first universal requirement profiles in materials and surfaces, which are necessary for a stable operation of the swim pond system and also for the subsequent maintenance capability during operation. Starting with the constructive shell up to materials introduced and substratum. In this connection the conception in the planning phase of the swim pond system will be also included as the different requirements in construction, operation and maintenance depending in the chosen category.
In the second part of the lecture a range of product developments will be shown for all kinds of swim ponds, natural pools and also public pools: Development status of liner surfaces, interesting construction-trends to increase the customers satisfaction, targeted use of heating and covering to stable the quality of the water also as new developments of maintenance units for private and public swim ponds and natural pools.

The lime-carbonic acid system in the water and its significance for natural swimming pool construction
Speaker: Peter Petrich (A)
The lime-carbon dioxide system is a complex interaction of chemical processes. It works as an efficient buffer in the water, so that adding acid or alkaline has only a minimal effect on the pH values. According to the Redfield formula, carbon is the most important nutrient for all plants. The daily variations in the pH value in a swimming pond reflect the changing availability of carbon dioxide.
This has far-reaching consequences for the water plants, which are explained in the presentation. The presentation then discusses how the carbonate can cause changes in the hardness of the water and explains what must be taken into consideration.
Peter Petrich is a graduate of the HTBLA for gardening in Vienna-Schönbrunn and completed studies in landscape ecology and landscape architecture at the University for Ground Culture (BOKU) in Vienna in 1996.
In 1985, he founded the company BIOTOP-Landschaftsgestaltung GmbH. Two years later he won the Conservation Award – the Austrian environmental award – with the idea of swimming ponds as an ecological alternative to a chlorine purified swimming pool.
Since 1994, BIOTOP GmbH has been active as a system supplier in swimming pond construction 1994 and in the meantime they cooperate worldwide with over 70 licensees.

WORKSHOP: Understanding water values, water analysis, water quality
Speakers: Udo Schwarzer (P) & Peter Petrich (A)
This workshop deals with tips relating to the interpretation of water analyses.
Whether it is a fill water sample or whether it is natural pool water, the values in the water analysis have to be understood. However, not only the individual values are of importance; much more information can be obtained by demonstrating the relationship between the individual values with the help of formulae. That is the topic in this workshop. Please bring water analyses from your own practical work!

From what point onwards can we no longer talk of biological water treatment?
Speaker: Dr. Carsten Tusche (D)
Plants and micro-organisms are able to effectively extract nutrients from bodies of water and to store these in their biomass. Unfavorable environmental conditions or chemical-physical effects by human activity can considerably disturb these processes – with undesired effects.
The presentation provides insight into the effective principles of the biological water treatment and their correlates: physics, chemistry and people. Capacity and performance thresholds of various groups of organisms are extracted and show that these can be promoted and hindered from the edge of the pond.
Dr. Karsten Tusche in 2006 completed a bachelor study of agricultural sciences and 2008 a masters in aquaculture and fishery sciences (in English), both of which at the Humbolt University in Berlin. Tusche was a scientific employee at the institute for animal breeding and animal husbandry (specialist department of aquaculture) at the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel, graduated with a Ph.D in 2012 in the specialization of Aquaculture and fish nutrition has been employed at the fish farm Rietschen GmbH since 2011.

PROJECT “REFERENCE SYSTEMS AND NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT” – SYSTEMATIC EXAMINATION AND ASSESSMENT OF BIOLOGICALLY PREPARED BATHING WATERS
Speaker: Christian Bürle (CH)
There are still not a lot of complete data sets available on the operation of biologically prepared bathing waters, especially privately run ones. Intensive support and recording of essential parameters are normally only performed for private systems during the planning and implementation phase. Although the use and maintenance of the water considerably influences the pond eco-system, the role of the pond owner has, so far, received relatively little attention. The type and duration of the maintenance provided has also not been documented well. From 2014 to 2015, selected pond systems were intensively supported and important data were recorded, which are presented here.
Chritian Bührle completed his BSc in Environmental Engineering, with a focus on urban garden construction, in November 2015 at the ZHAW, Zurich College for Applied Sciences in Wädenswil. He has been employed at ASC-Schweiz in Winterthur since June 2014. Bachelor thesis: Reference systems and nutrient management (Buehrle/Frei). Systematic examination and assessment of biologically prepared bathing waters. Development of an assessment system and follow-up scientific examination, support and assessment of selected pond areas.
