BIOFILTER PROJECT: FILTER TEST STATUS FOR CHECKING THE PROPERTIES OF VARIOUS FILTERS FOR BIOLOGICAL SWIMMING WATER PREPARATION

In biologically treated swimming waters of category 4 and 5, various filter systems are used to reduce the phosphorous in the open water in order to reduce the algae and bio film growth in the swimming area. The optimal construction as well as the operating conditions for optimal water treatment is not well known, even today. Most available systems work well, but unpredictable events quickly lead to overloads. To optimize the filter systems, methods have been established to be able to target and test various filter materials and operating variants.
Matthias Frei is an environmental engineer and scientific assistant at the ZHAW – Zurich University of Applied Sciences, research group for ecological technology. He is also the managing director of ASC SCHWEIZ (Allg. Schwimmteich Club Schweiz) the general swimming pond club in Switzerland.

MAINTENANCE AND CARE INSTRUCTIONS, POND MAINTENENCE – THE UNDERESTIMATED TOPIC

Customer satisfaction stands or falls with the maintenance. How does one care for a swimming pond or natural pool? What amount of time is required for this? These are the most common questions that arise during customer meetings. Maintenance has to be considered during the planning phase. Factors such as construction shape, materials, filling water, location etc. are decisive for the type and dimensions of maintenance. This applies not only to private swimming ponds, but also to public natural pools. The presentation provides a clear and practical view of which criteria must be considered for the maintenance of the swimming pond and natural pools and what the consequences of incorrect maintenance application can be.
Birgit Gassmann has operated a service company for natural pools, garden and swimming ponds for the last 10 years. Customer satisfaction is her highest priority. In the meantime, she performs the spring maintenance and opening up of the areas as well as the autumn maintenance and winter preparation for 70 customers.
Wendelin Jehle plans, builds and maintains swimming ponds and natural pools as a biotope partner company for many years. In 1996 he took over the company Schleitzer Garten und Landschaftsbau (garden and landscaping company) in Munich and for many years he was the vice-president in the garden landscaping and sports ground construction (Verband Garten- Landschaft und Sportplatzbau) in upper Bavaria. Since 2006, the company Schleitzer Gärtner von Eden has been managed by Alexander and Daniel, the sons of Wendelin Jehle. Since 2013 he has been president of the DGfnB and is active in the various FLL regulatory policy committees.

SWIMMING AREAS - MOBILITY FOR EVERYONE

Barrier-free bathing areas in the sense of a “design for everyone” offer inclusive use with comfort, safety and orientation in all stages of life. Instead of special, separate solutions for people with limited capabilities, buildings and open areas are designed to consider the heterogeneity of the users. Not only wheelchair accessibility, but also users with limited vision or no eyewear must be considered today. Based on practical examples, new aspects of DIN 18040 for motoric and sensor planning aspects (visual, audio and tactile design) will be explained to create future-capable and sustainable solutions, down to detail, based on the users and building requirements.
Ulrike Rau has been a free-lance architect in Berlin since 1994 and is the owner of the raumkonzepte offices. Expert literature for inclusive, barrier-free concepts. The results of a research paper on “visual/non-visual spatial perception” teaching activities from 1995-2001 at the TU Berlin have been included in the book on accessible building for the future entitled “barrierefrei – bauen für die zukunft”. In the architecture chamber of Berlin, Ulrike Rau is active in the working group “Universal Design I Barrierefreiheit I Demografie” and has been the president or vice president since 2009.

WORKSHOP: Manufacturers as networkers

The objective of the workshop is to build permanent networks and important structures for recommendation management. The participants learn which products and solutions are presented by other companies. In this first network meeting, each participant and each participating company will have the opportunity to present their own business. Depending on the total number of participants, the presentation will last about five minutes and can be held ad hoc or as a PowerPoint presentation. The target audience includes manufacturers and suppliers in the swimming pond and natural pool industry, interested parties are more than welcome! *) If necessary, please bring the corresponding brief company presentations on a USB drive.

The new DGfnB leaflet as a script for almost danger-free swimming in biologically perfect water is explained in practice using examples. It provides clarification of existing uncertainties: You can expect an “illustrated safety tour” with good and safe solutions, even for dangerous conditions. The basics for the supervision of pools as well as peculiarities for biological water treatment are developed on the basis of applicable regulations and guidelines.

The Tim Köhler landscape architecture team plans open-air areas, swimming and natural pools. The demand for a variety of uses for recreational areas requires pragmatic and at the same time creative solutions. Examples are biological salt water treatment, load-bearing filters (some with Kneipp treatment functions), non-swimmer safety grates or secure year-round concepts for open-air pools. Andreas Spieker has provided consultation in European holiday destinations for the operators of more than 5,000 pools and aqua parks for questions of public safety obligations and supervision. The scope of services includes safety checks, planning and construction accompany assessments as well as expert opinions. He is the DIN working group leader for “electronic systems to support supervision in swimming and bathing pools” and was a consultant for the DGfnB leaflet on public safety and supervisory obligations in swimming pools with biological water treatment 2015.

AVOIDING CONFLICTS WHEN BUILDING SWIMMING PONDS
For private customers as well as public or commercial clients, it is practical to develop strategies to prevent conflicts from occurring and to react properly to anticipated conflicts. Often the scene is set for conflicts during the acquisition phase, even if the parties are unaware of this. Once the parties are in conflict, a lot depends on the further communication. It might require a lot of time and effort, but one should attempt to avoid any conflict landing in court. Therefore, it is important to have a thoughtful and fair culture for discourse. In particular the consultants – either lawyers or experts – require a lot of tact in this phase.
Andre Bußmann is a lawyer and specialist for construction and architectural law. His legal practice specializes in gardens and landscaping and knows the problems pool constructors are faced with. Over the years and on the basis of his many years of membership in the DGfnB (German society for natural swimming waters), he has been able to develop in-depth knowledge of the problems occurring in the industry of natural swimming and bathing pools.

Daniela Glanzmann is a professional accountant and has been the president of the association Naturbad Sulz e.V. since 1992, which has been operating a natural pool in Lahr-Sulz since 2003. Since 2008 she has also been a member of the board of DGfnB, a member of the working group and thus the contact partner for the operators of pools with biological water treatment. She regularly organizes operator meetings in the south of Germany and is responsible for granting the IQN certificate from the DGfnB. She is also a member of the working group for the DGfnB leaflet on public safety and supervisory obligations in swimming pools with biological water treatment 2015
Katharina Fick is an economist and the mayor of Rodewald. She was involved in founding the support club for the Rodewald outdoor pool and is active in the board of directors. In 2002/2003, the outdoor pool was converted to a pool with biological water treatment. Katharina Fick is the second vice president of the DGfnB and also the contact partner for operators of swimming pools with biological water treatment. Experience with natural pool standards in Europe
On the basis of examples, the speakers will report on practical experience with the quality standards for public natural swimming pools.
Experience with natural pool in Italy / South Tyrol
In Italy there are no guidelines for natural pools. In 2011 South Tyrol was adopting a guideline for water quality, monitoring and management in public
natural pools. The data of the first five years are presented.

When planning for permission to build a new object, it is often difficult for authorities to clearly differentiate between bathing lakes and swimming ponds. However, the allocation has serious consequences for the swimming authorities, the threshold values and general operation. The corresponding features will be explained in the presentation. Furthermore, it will also examine to which extent the regulatory bodies make contradictory statements and how these can be remedied, if necessary. The workshop is for authorities and planners based in Europe.
